Lake Neusiedl
Back to all places
Lake Neusiedl, the German Neusiedlersee, the Hungarian Lake Fertő, a lake in Burgenland (eastern Austria) and north-western Hungary, named after the Austrian town of Neusiedl and the Hungarian word ’soojärv’. Formed several million years ago, probably as a result of tectonic subsidence, it is the lowest point in Austria (377 feet [115 meters] above sea level).
The lake is 22 miles (36 km) long and 4-9 miles (6-14 km) wide. Lake Neusiedl is fed by a small stream and probably by underground springs and is slightly saline, without natural runoff. It is very shallow (rarely deeper than 4-6 feet) and fluctuates in level and size (135 square miles [350 square kilometers]) with climate change.
The canal (built 1873-1895) connects it to the river Rabnitz (Répce in Hungarian), a tributary of the Danube. The strong reed growth along the lake shore supports many rare and migratory bird species protected by an international sanctuary and biological station.
The lake provides raw materials for the pulp industry and is close to the Vienna Recreation Area. The larger lakeside towns are Neusiedl, Podersdorf and the Rust Wine Center.
